NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles completed their first sweep of the Manhattan Jaspers since 2005 by taking both games of Saturday’s doubleheader at Bobo Field.
“It was a great weekend for our kids,” head coach
Rob McCoy said. “They played hard and had fun. Our pitching was directly responsible for our success. We will lean on those guys to reach our goals.”
Game 1
The first game was all Niagara (7-19, 3-3 MAAC) as the home team took advantage of a couple of round-trippers and a quality start from
Jordan Schwartz (1-2) to get the 7-0 win. The sophomore right-hander threw all seven innings and gave up just six hits without surrendering a run.
After breaking through with three runs in the third, the Purple Eagles added to their lead with two-run homeruns in both of the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth,
Kevin Paulsen got on base with a single through the left side and was brought home by a
Jeff Calhoon homer. Schwartz sat the Jaspers (10-13, 3-3 MAAC) down in order to allow NU to keep the 5-0 lead.
Joel Klock led off the fifth with a walk to force a pitching change but
Michael Fuhrman followed up with a two-run shot to left to give NU the 7-0 lead.
Schwartz surrendered one hit in each of the last two innings to preserve the 7-0 victory.
Calhoon went on to finish the game 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs and a walk. Fuhrman, who had an RBI in the third, finished with a game-high three RBIs and finished 2-for-3.
Game 2
The second game was a little closer than the opener as the Purple Eagles came out on top 2-1. The game was scoreless through three innings before the Jaspers opened the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth but the lead didn’t last long as, just like when the Jaspers took the lead in the third inning of game one (the last time they held a lead in the series), the Purple Eagles responded immediately. Not to be outdone by fellow catcher Calhoon who homered in the opener,
Evan Wexler sent a two-run bomb to right field to give NU the 2-1 lead.
That was all of the offense through the first six innings.
Jim Fort (2-3) threw six complete innings giving up the one run on five hits while striking out three and did not issue a walk.
The Purple Eagles held onto the lead through the final three innings, but it wasn’t easy. Manhattan loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh but
Geoff Soja forced a pop out to end the frame. Soja held the Jaspers to a hit in the eighth but the bases would be loaded again in the ninth, which led to the double play of the season. With the bases loaded, Nick Camastro flied out to left for what looked like it would be the sacrifice fly to tie the game, but Andrew Gorecki left third base early. While the outfielder was sliding across the plate, Paulsen got the ball into third baseman
Greg Rodgers who stepped on third to end the game.
Fort got the win and Soja earned the save after pitching 2.1 innings and giving up three hits.
Sean Quinlan threw two thirds of an inning and gave up a pair of hits. Schwartz had an impact at the plate in the late game, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Purple Eagles are back on the field next weekend when they host the Iona Gaels at Sal Maglie Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.
