The Niagara men’s and women’s tennis teams will host their first conference weekend of the season against Siena and Loyola.
The Niagara men (7-6, 1-0 MAAC) halted a six-match skid by winning its last three matches last week. Three Purple Eagles are in double-digit wins in singles, led by
Olivier Dufour-Coursol ith 14. Dufour-Coursol is a team-best 7-3 in his last 10 matches including on a three-match winning streak and is 7-0 in No. 3 singles.
David Raymond is 12-8 and
Lorenz Schwojer is on a four-match winning streak to bring his record to 12-5 on the season.
The doubles tandem of
Michael Elortegui and
Mathieu Lacasse went 3-1 in doubles last week including winning three straight. Schwojer and
Brandon Gallegos went 2-0.
Siena comes to town 2-2 and 1-0 in conference play. Ryan Schmitz and Eric Sumanaru are tied for the team’s lead in singles with a 3-1 record and the Saints’ No. 2 and 3 doubles team are both 3-0 this season. NU has a decade-plus win streak against Siena. Loyola is 5-0 in dual matches this season and the Greyhounds are led by Jordan Kuchta (5-0) and Greg Olesnycky (5-0). The Purple Eagles have won 10 of the last 13 meetings with the Greyhounds.
The Niagara women (7-5, 2-0 MAAC) also won three of their four matches during their spring break trip last week. Freshman phenom
Sarah Hellstern is 10-0 on the season in singles to start her career. The Stuttgart, Germany native was recently named MAAC Player of the Week for the second time this season. Senior captain
Hilary Hansen is second on the team with a 9-6 record and is 7-2 in doubles with her partner
Maria Ortiz.
Erika Reagan leads Siena (2-4, 1-0 MAAC) in singles with a 6-6 record. NU is 6-1 versus Siena since 2007. Loyola is 3-0 on the season. The Purple Eagles are 5-2 against Loyola in the last seven matches, but have dropped the two straight in the series.
