WATERLOO, Ont. – The Niagara men's swimming and diving team topped the Waterloo University Warriors by a final score of 158-104, while the women's squad fell, 162-98, on Sunday afternoon.
Overall, Niagara swimmers claimed 13 individual titles to go along with one relay title throughout the squad's non-conference meet.
"We had a great time across the border today," head coach
Ben Nigro said. "It was great to compete against a strong Canadian school."
The trio of Shane Baxter, Shawn Warner and Robert Brown finished as the top performers for the Purple Eagles, as each recorded three individual victories in addition to being members of the winning 200 medley relay team.
Baxter secured wins in the 100 and 200 backstroke with finishing times of 51.11 and 1:52.89, respectively, and also claimed the top spot in the 100 butterfly (52.31). Brown was victorious in the 50 freestyle (22.28), 100 freestyle (48.33) and 200 freestyle (1:47.92), while Warner registered top times in the 200 butterfly (1:55.34), 500 freestyle (4:47.66) and the 200 IM (1:55.75).
The three Purple Eagles combined with
Carl Roycroft in the 200 medley relay for a first place finish with a time of 1:37.37.
Niagara also saw
Jason Ellis turn in a first-place performance in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:17.57.
The women's side was highlighted by three first place finishes.
Ashley Harrington claimed the top time in the 200 butterfly (2:16.02), while
Sydney Kligys and
Meredith Ricks captured first in the 100 freestyle (56.01) and 200 backstroke (2:12.89), respectively.
Up next, the Purple Eagles will welcome Cleveland State to the Oxy Aquatic Center on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m.
