HAMDEN, Conn.—
Breanna Catipovic scored the game equalizer and
Claire Feiertag made nine saves as the Niagara women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against the Quininpiac Bobcats on Saturday afternoon.
After falling behind a goal late in the second half, the Purple Eagles (4-10-1; 3-3-1 MAAC) received the game-tying goal from Catipovic with 14 minutes left to play in the contest sending the game into overtime. Feiertag her excellent play in goal, making six saves in a pair of overtime periods for a total of a career-high nine stops.
"I was proud of how we bounced back from a poor first half," head coach
Peter Veltri said. "We gave up a cheap penalty kick in the first half, but we showed great heart in the second and in overtime. We created lots of chances and could have won this game."
Quinnipiac (2-5-4; 2-1-3 MAAC) capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity in the 33rd minute to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission. Aine McKeever stepped up to the line after
Maureen Papaconstantinou was called for a foul in the box, the midfielder struck for her third goal of the season.
The team's headed into the half with Quinnipiac holding a 6-1 advantage in shots.
Niagara's Catipovic gave the Purple Eagles life in the later stages of the second half, pocketing her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 76th minute to send the contest into overtime.
Ashlee Charbonneau had the initial shot on Quinnipiac goalkeeper Natalia Grodzki, but Catipovic pounced on the loose ball to make it 1-1. The senior is one goal shy of tying her career-high of eight goals achieved her sophomore year.
The teams battled for an extra 20 minutes, with the better chances tilting towards QU, but Feiertag remained steadfast in the backline and the contest ended in a hard fought draw.
The Purple Eagles will set off on a two-game road trip beginning with Fairfield University on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.
