NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles are owners of a four-game winning streak after earning their second doubleheader sweep in a row, defeating Saint Peter’s 4-2 and 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Sal Maglie Stadium.
Game One
Niagara (19-25, 7-12) was the first team to find its way onto the scoreboard in its half of the second.
Jon Wilson, who went 1-for-4 in the opener, singled through the left side but found his way to third after a stolen base and a passed ball.
Thomas Rodrigues singled to right to score Wilson and give NU the 1-0 lead.
Drew Fittry started the game on the mound for Niagara and kept Saint Peter’s (18-29, 8-9 MAAC) off the board until the sixth inning when they scored on a fielder’s choice to tie the game at 1-1. Fittry would go 6.2 innings giving up the single run on eight hits.
The Purple Eagles opened the game up in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-1 lead. After three-consecutive singles to start the inning,
Ryan McCauley sent a double to left and collected a pair of RBIs. The next batter up,
Wynton Bernard, singled through the left side to being McCauley home.
Geoff Soja entered the game in the eighth and gave up one run in the ninth that brought Saint Peter’s within two but didn’t allow it to come any closer and earned the save as the Purple Eagles came away with the 4-2 victory.
Anthony Caringi received the win out of the bullpen and McCauley led the way on offense going 4-2 at the plate and recording two RBIs.
Game Two
The teams combined for two hits through the 2.5 innings before Niagara jumped out to a four-run lead in the third.
Jeff Calhoon, who opened the inning drawing a walk after battling back from a 0-2 count, scored the first run of the game after a throwing error. McCauley followed up with a two-RBI single up the middle before Bernard brought him around with a double.
The Purple Eagles added some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. After another McCauley double and Bernard earned a free-pass to first, Wilson bounced a triple off the wall in right. Wilson would score on a passed ball to give Niagara its final 7-0 lead.
The Peacocks were held at bay by
Jim Fort who went the distance in the series’ seven-inning game. Through his seven innings of work, Fort gave up only five hits and struck out four.
Joel Klock had a team high three hits in a 3-for-4 performance and McCauley and Wilson both had two RBIs.
Niagara is back on the field tomorrow when it hosts the final game of the series against Saint Peter’s at noon.
