Box Score Game One
Box Score Game Two

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles baseball team won a pair of pitchers' duels to earn their second doubleheader sweep of the season against the Buffalo Bulls on Wednesday afternoon at the Amherst Audubon Field.

The four-game winning streak over Buffalo (12-29) this season is the longest for Niagara (17-25) since it took three consecutive games between 2004-05.

Game One
The opening game of the double-billing started with five runs in the first inning and a half and ended with only two in the final five and a half innings as Niagara came away with a 4-3 win.

The Purple Eagles didn’t waste any time taking the lead in the opener, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first, after starting the game with five consecutive players reaching base.  Both Joel Klock and Adam Wagner drew walks before Eric Hink got the first hit of the game with a single down the right field line.  Wynton Bernard gave Niagara a 2-0 lead with a two-RBI single down the first base line.  The centerfielder stole second base to help set up Jon Wilson, who cashed in another two-runs with a double off the wall in left center.

Buffalo responded with a solo home run to left field to cut the lead to 4-1 before the pitchers shut things down.

Tyler Spear, who would go the distance for his third win of the season, gave up three hits in the final five innings.  Spear finished the day by giving up three runs on eight hits, while collecting five strikeouts in Niagara’s 4-3 victory.

Bernard and Wilson both finished the game going 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs.

Game Two
The second game of the day was much like the first, as Niagara took a lead early and didn’t look back, coming away with a 5-1 victory.

Niagara scored a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch in the first inning to go up 2-0.  After the Bulls scored on a sacrifice fly of their own in the second inning, the Purple Eagles expanded their lead in the third.  Klock, Thomas Rodrigues, and Hink opened the inning with three-consecutive singles, giving Niagara a 3-1 lead.  Ryan McCauley brought in a run with a grounder to second base and Bernard collected his third RBI of the day to make the score 5-1.

After the run in the second inning, starter Kody Kasper only allowed two hits in the third inning before Geoff Soja took over in the eighth inning and didn’t give up a hit.  In total, Kasper threw six innings, giving up one run on five hits for his first win of the year.

Klock had a team-high two hits (2-for-3) and Hink had a team-high two RBIs.

Niagara is back on the field this weekend when it hosts Saint Peter’s at Sal Maglie Stadium.  The series gets underway with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
