NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – After taking the lead late in the game, the Purple Eagles were victims of a late comeback by Canisius and dropped the final game of the 2012 season 7-5 Friday afternoon at Bobo Field.
Niagara (19-28, 7-16 MAAC) made a late rally in the bottom of the seventh.
Jeff Calhoon led off with a double and was advanced to third by a SAC-bunt by Adam Wagner. A batter later,
Eric Hink launched a solo home run to right field and gave Niagara a 5-4 lead.
Canisius (31-25, 16-8 MAAC) came back in the top of the ninth with two-consecutive singles tying the game and a RBI-double bringing in a pair of runs to give the Griffs the 7-5 lead. The Purple Eagles were held scoreless in their half of the ninth and Canisius came away with the two-run win.
The Golden Griffins opened up the scoring in the third, scoring two runs on a single and a passed ball. The Purple Eagles responded immediately in the last of the third, tying the game at 2-2 with RBIs from
Thomas Rodrigues and Hink. Canisius added a run in fourth and sixth with NU adding one in the fifth thanks to a
Ryan McCauley RBI-single.
Jon Wilson and McCauley both went 2-for-4 at the plate while Hink had a game-high three RBIs.
Joel Klock got the start on the mound and threw 7.1 innings, gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits and struck out five.
