Baseball Drops Pair Against Canisius

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles dropped both games of their weekday doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Sal Maglie Stadium by the scores of 8-4 and 12-1.
 
Game One
After Canisius (30-25, 15-8 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the second, Niagara (19-28, 7-15 MAAC) came back with a two-run third.  Evan Wexler drew a walk to open the inning and Thomas Rodrigues singled to put two-runners on base.  Eric Hink singled to right to bring both runners home and give NU the 2-1 lead.
 
With the game tied at 3-3 through five and a half innings, the Purple Eagles took the lead again in the bottom of the sixth.  Wexler singled to right to bring around Jesse Harris and put Niagara ahead 4-3.
 
The score would remain the same until the top of the eighth when Canisius collected five runs on four singles and take an 8-4 lead, which they held through the final 1.5 innings.
 
Hink led the Purple Eagles offensively, going 2-for-4 at the plate and collecting a team high two RBIs.  Tyler Spear started the game for Niagara, pitching to a no decision after throwing six innings and giving up three runs, with only two earned, on six hits.  Kody Kasper (1-3) received the loss coming out of the bullpen.
 
Game Two
Canisius again took a lead in the third inning, this time taking a 6-0 lead after collecting four singles and a double.  Niagara responded with a Joel Klock RBI-single in the bottom of the inning but Canisius scored two runs in the fourth, one in the sixth, and three in the seventh to come away with a 12-1 victory.
 
Jeff Calhoon went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored a run for Niagara while Wynton Bernard stole a base after coming in as a pinch runner to move his season total up to 32.  Drew Fittry (4-3) started and received the loss for the Purple Eagles.
 
Niagara is back in action tomorrow at Bobo Field for its final game of the season, taking on Canisius at noon.
