Baseball Drops Close Game To Fairfield

Box Score

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles had their four-game winning streak snapped in a tight game against the Fairfield Stags 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Sal Maglie Stadium.

Three of the game’s four runs came in the second inning with Fairfield (15-20, 4-6 MAAC) breaking the scoreless tie in the top of the inning.  With runners on second and third a single brought two runs across and gave the Stags a 2-0 lead.

Niagara (15-19, 5-7 MAAC) answered back in its half of the second.  Thomas Rodrigues led off with a single and advanced to third when Adam Wagner collected a single of his own.  With runners on the corners, Eric Hink singled to left field to score Rodrigues and cut the deficit to 2-1.

Fairfield added one more run in the fourth after a leadoff hit and an error later in the inning to give the Stags their final 3-1 lead.  The pitchers took over from that point on, surrendering a combined nine hits over the last 5.5 innings.

Joel Klock started the game for NU and pitched seven innings, giving up seven hits, three unearned runs, and struck out three.  Hink led the way on offense with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate and a RBI.

The Purple Eagles have a schedule change due to Saturday’s inclement weather.  Tomorrow they will play a doubleheader at Sal Maglie Stadium starting at 11 a.m.
