BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Niagara women’s lacrosse team fell in a Battle of the Bridge contest to the Canisius Golden Griffins by a final score of 21-3 at the Demske Sports Complex on Wednesday evening.
"We didn't play our game and Canisius capitalized on it," head coach
Amber Hill said. "They did a good job pushing the ball and unfortunately we didn't play as a team."
The Golden Griffins (7-7; 3-2 MAAC) took control of the game early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead with senior Megan Oosting starting the scoring for Canisius at the 29:05 mark.
Junior Morgan Leonard netted the next three tallies for the Golden Griffins before junior
Fran Pollastro got the Purple Eagles (3-10; 0-5 MAAC) on the board 6:54 into the game. Canisius would counter with a 9-0 run to head into intermission with a 13-1 lead.
The Golden Griffins continued their offensive pressure in the second half with three goals less than five minutes into play, to take a commanding 16-1 lead. Seniors
Nicole Karek and
Taryn Burkholder would score Niagara's two final goals.
Freshman
Nicole Wawro finished the game stopping six Canisius shots.
Despite the loss, the Purple Eagles continue to lead this season’s Battle of the Bridge series 14.5-12.5 and needs 2.5 points to clinch the series.
Niagara wraps up the regular season when it hosts the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
