AMHERST, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles are now on a four-game winning streak and have won five for their last seven games after sweeping their doubleheader with the Buffalo Bulls on Tuesday afternoon.
Game One
Niagara (15-18) jumped out to a big lead in the first and Buffalo (10-22) was never able to recover.
Adam Wagner tripled and was brought around by an
Eric Hink double. Later,
Jon Wilson took advantage of the wind blowing out to straightaway center and sent a three-run blast to put NU up 4-0 in the bottom of the first.
The Bulls put a run on the board with a sacrifice fly in the second but
Wynton Bernard got the two of his four total RBIs with a single in the third that scored both Hink and
Ryan McCauley to put Niagara in front 6-1.
Buffalo scored the next three runs, two in the third and one in the fourth, but in the fifth Niagara started to extend the lead. Bernard got another RBI and was brought around to score, after stealing third, by a
Jordan Schwartz single and the Purple Eagles were out in front 8-4.
The teams traded runs in the sixth and UB was able to bring one more across in the seventh, but that was as close as
Cody Lillich allowed UB to come and the Purple Eagles came away with a 9-6 victory.
Tyler Spear got the start on the mound for Niagara and picked up the win after giving up four runs, three earned, in four innings of work. Bernard led the way offensively with three hits on four trips to the plate, four RBIs, two runs scored, and the stolen base. Hink also went 3-for-4 but had one RBI and four runs scored.
Game Two
After Niagara got things started with a McCauley RBI double, Buffalo took its first lead of the day when a two-run homer put the Bulls up 2-1 in the second.
The Purple Eagles went back on top with a three-run third inning.
Joel Klock started the scoring with a double down the left field line to score
Thomas Rodrigues. Hink added a RBI-single and McCauley collected a sacrifice fly to put NU back in front 4-2.
Niagara added to the lead with four more runs in the fourth. Wagner drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run and Hink’s single brought across two more. Wagner scored the final run of the inning when he forced the catcher into an error after stealing third and put extended the Purple Eagles lead to 8-2.
The Bulls cut the lead in half, 8-4, with a RBI single and a sac-fly in the fifth but Niagara put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, and final, inning. Bernard recorded his fifth RBI of the day with a single. Jesse Harris brought another run across with a sacrifice fly of his own and Rodrigues wrapped up the scoring with a two-RBI single to push Niagara’s lead to 12-4.
Buffalo scored one final run before Niagara was able to close the door and come away with a 12-5 win and stretch its winning streak to four games.
Anthony Caringi made his first career start and earned his first career win after he threw four innings and giving up four runs on five hits and striking out three. Hink went 3-for-4 in the second game as well, this time collecting three RBIs.
Niagara is back in action this Saturday when it hosts Fairfield for a doubleheader at Sal Maglie Stadium at noon.
