Women's Lacrosse Battles The Saints

In the last of three consecutive home games, the Niagara women's lacrosse team looks to overcome conference foe the Siena Saints on Wednesday, April 11 at 4 p.m. from Niagara Field.

How to Tune In
    Wednesday’s contest between the Purple Eagles and the Saints can be seen in the Buffalo and Albany area courtesy of Time Warner Cable SportsNet.  The match will air on Thursday, April 12 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m.

Last Time Out
    Niagara heads into Wednesday’s game having lost a 16-7 decision to conference opponent the Iona Gaels. Senior Emily French  had a two-point game with a goal and an assist. The Purple Eagles also got tallies from freshmen Carrie-Jo Farrugia , Savannah Pearce and Courtney Pierce as well as junior Fran Pollastro, and seniors Taryn Burkholder and Nicole Karek.  

Scouting the Saints
    The Siena Saints enter the game against the Purple Eagles with an overall 3-9 record, while playing to a 1-2 MAAC record.
    The Saints are led by seniors Deirdre McQuillan (31-7-38) and Michelle Andreo (22-3-25), while getting solid play from junior Katie Maguire (21-1-22) and senior Kristin McMillan (14-1-15). In net for Siena will likely be senior Kristin Concordia, who has recorded a 14.44 goals-against average and a .337 save percentage. 

The Last Time Versus The Saints
    Wednesday marks the 16th all-time meeting between Niagara and Siena with the Purple Eagles holding a 9-6 edge since their first meeting in 1997. The last time these two schools faced off was on April 15, 2011 in Loudonville, N.Y., where the Saints sped to a 5-0 lead before taking the game by a 12-3 margin. Niagara received contributions from Nicole Karek and a two-goal effort by Purple Eagle alum Rianne Farrugia (’11).

Offensive Outburst
    In nine games this season, the Purple Eagles have scored 90 goals, the most in that span since the 2005 season when Niagara tallied 98 goals in nine contests.

Hats Off To You
    The Purple Eagles have three student-athletes who have scored hat tricks during the 2012 campaign in senior Emily French, junior Fran Pollastro and sophomore Paige Matecki. Pollastro had three-goal efforts against Albany and Gannon while French earned her first career hat trick against Sacred Heart. She, along with Matecki also scored three goals in the victory over Notre Dame College.
    On March 23 against Detroit Mercy, French and Pollastro each poured in five goals.

Home Sweet Home
    The Purple Eagles have been tough to beat at Niagara Field as all three Niagara victories this season have come at home, starting with a 10-8 win over Gannon, followed by a nail-biting 14-13 last second win and most recently, a 16-9 victory over Notre Dame College.  

On the Road Again
    The Purple Eagles’ next contest marks the beginning of a three-game road trip for Niagara. The team will play its third straight MAAC opponent when it takes on the Manhattan Jaspers at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 14. Two days later Niagara will face Dartmouth and head into its final regular season game after a matchup against crosstown rival Canisius on Wednesday, April 18.
