EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Niagara men’s tennis team clipped Mount St. Mary’s, 4-3, while the women’s team was edged by the same score on Friday.

The men’s team (3-4) had to rally after dropping the doubles point.
Brandon Gallegos tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win in No. 3 singles. Freshmen
Olivier Dufour-Coursol and
David Raymond notched wins in fifth and second singles, respectively, to give NU a 3-2 lead. After falling in No. 4 singles,
David Lemieux-Sarrasin cruised past Patrick McGinley, 6-0, 6-2, in the decisive match.

“We came out flat and were back on our heels from the outset,” head coach
Anthony Nguyen said. “We found a way to get it done in singles. We look forward to playing Loyola tomorrow.”

Despite losing the doubles points, the women’s team (3-6) took a 3-1 lead with wins by
Hilary Hansen,
Ashley Ta and
Maria Ortiz in singles.
Iva Celan fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and the Purple Eagles dropped singles matches in the No. 5 and No. 6 slot.

“Unfortunately, the women lost another close battle,” Nguyen said. “We just didn’t play very disciplined doubles today. We fought hard in singles, but came up short.”

Niagara will play Loyola on Saturday for its conference opener.
