Box Score: Game One
Box Score: Game Two
RICHMOND, VA – The Niagara baseball team (2-2) came back to win the first game of the series with Richmond (1-2) that was postponed until this afternoon, but then fell to the Spiders in game two.
“It’s the tale of two games,’ head coach
Rob McCoy said. “We fought hard and never gave up in game one. Game two was different. We got down early and couldn’t crawl back in it.”
Niagara 11, Richmond 10
Niagara opened the game up in the top of the third with the score tied at 4-4. Coming out of a lightning delay,
Wynton Bernard doubled to center field and was brought around by the next batter at the plate as
Ryan McCauley hit an RBI single up the middle.
Two batters later,
Jesse Harris hit his second double of the game, and Niagara’s third double of the inning, to right-center that brought in two more runs. Niagara would come out of the inning up 7-3.
In the top of the fourth the game was again delayed by the weather and postponed until noon on Saturday. When the teams resumed play, Richmond turned in a four-run bottom of the fourth to tie the game 7-7. Then Spiders were able to build a 9-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of home runs.
The Purple Eagles fought back in the top of the ninth as
Eric Hink started Niagara’s ninth with a single up the middle for his third hit of the game. Two batters later
Jon Wilson recorded his only hit of the game with a two-run homer to left center to tie the game at 9-9. Richmond made a change on the mound but it didn’t help as
Evan Wexler hit the second of back-to-back homers to right field to put Niagara in the lead 10-9.
The Spiders tied the game on a sac-fly in the bottom of the ninth and the teams played through a scoreless tenth. It was in the top of the 11th when Niagara would score the 21
st and final run of the game as
Joel Klock, who was brought in to pinch hit for Harris in the bottom of the ninth, hit Niagara’s fourth home run of the game to right field and gave the Purple Eagles an 11-10 victory.
Harris led the way offensively for Niagara. The designated hitter went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two RBI, and a pair of runs scored.
Jordan Schwartz gets the win out of the bullpen, throwing three innings, giving up one run on one hit, and striking out two.
Richmond 10, Niagara 1
The Spiders jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on the Purple Eagles in the first inning but Niagara’s responded in the top of the second when
Jeff Calhoon hit a bases-loaded single through the left side to score McCauley and cut the deficit to 3-1.
From there it was all Richmond as Niagara struggled to get things going against the Spiders' Jacob Mayers. The right hander threw eight innings giving up the one run on five hits and struck out seven.
“Richmond’s pitcher was dominant and gave us fits and we need to be better on the mound,” McCoy said. “Twenty runs in two games will rarely get it done in college baseball.”
McCauley led the Purple Eagles in the second game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Kody Kasper gets the loss after going 3.2 innings giving up six runs, with five earned, on nine hits.
The Purple Eagles and the Spiders will play the rubber match of the series tomorrow with first pitch at noon.
