NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. – The Niagara men’s tennis team collected its first win of the season, while the women’s team suffered its first loss against Bucknell on Friday.
The men’s team (1-2) had to rally for its first win of the season. NU stroll to picking up the doubles point by winning all three doubles matches, 8-5; the doubles tandem of
Olivier Dufour Coursol and
Lorenz Schwojer improved 2-0 on the season.
However, Niagara found itself trailing 2-1 after dropping the matches in No. 1 and No. 3 singles.
David Raymond edged Evan Zimmer in No. 2 singles in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, to remain unbeaten in the spring season (3-0).
Brandon Gallegos’ straight set win No. 4 singles gave Niagara a 3-2 lead and Coursol cruised past Kyle Rosen, 6-1, 6-1, to win the match for the Purple Eagles.
“The guys played with great energy in doubles tonight and it translated into positive results,” head coach
Anthony Nguyen said. “Guys competed really hard in singles and we were happy to come away with a victory.”
On the women’s side (2-1), NU lost the doubles point, despite have its No. 1 team –
Hilary Hansen and
Iva Celan – winning convincingly (8-1) for their third straight win. The Purple Eagles were down 3-0 after losing in No. 1 and 2 singles before rallying to tie the match.
Ashley Ta and
Maria Ortiz won in No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, to also remain unbeaten in the spring. Viki Sardellittti won her second singles match of the season with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Laruen Boone to tie the match at 3-3. The sixth and deciding match went to Bucknell.
“We lost a close doubles point and close matches at one and two singles,” Nguyen said. “Ashley toughed out a close one and Viki was impressive in her match. Although the girls lost, Patrick and I were proud of the way we fought and competed.”
The men’s team’s next matches will be Orlando when it plays three matches next week. The women’s team will host Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Sunday at 4 p.m. before heading to Orlando for its spring break matches.
