Niagara Downs Temple In Thriller

Box Score

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Sophomore Bre Catipovic launched a long shot that clinched the game for the Niagara women's soccer team (2-4-0) in double overtime against the visiting Temple Owls (2-4-0) by a 1-0 score on Sunday afternoon at Niagara Field.

The Western New York native took a long run before launching a shot from 15 feet outside the box, that got past a diving Gillian Kacsuta for the victory just two minutes into the second overtime session.

"The ball was passed right to my feet," Catipovic said. "After a great pass, I went with it, gained some confidence and went for the shot. It was the best feeling in the world when that shot went in the net for the win."

Temple controlled much of the play early on in the contest, but Niagara picked up its intensity in the later stages of the opening 45 minutes. Late in the first half, Catipovic struck a ball that spun to the far post, having Temple goalkeeper Kacsuta beat, but the ball took an unlucky turn and hit the post.

Niagara had several chances to dent the scoreboard in the second half, including a shot from freshman Courtney Pierce that went high and a chip from senior Chelsea Mandrino that just sailed over the crossbar.

Senior Gabrielle Wilson was a rock for the Purple Eagles in net, making eight saves in the victory. Wilson helped keep the game scoreless late in the second half, when she made two point blank saves within five seconds of each other to halt any Owls momentum.

Wilson was once again up to the task late in the first overtime period, when she came way out of the box to slide and cut off the angle of the Temple forward, killing the breakaway and sending the game into the second overtime, setting up Catipovic's epic goal.

The Purple Eagles are back in action on Friday, when they host the Big Four Invitational. Niagara plays Buffalo at 7:30 pm on Friday.
