FREDONIA, N.Y. - The Niagara University men’s swimming and diving team tallied its first win of the season against Fredonia with a final score of 126-115 while the women dropped their meet 140-103 against the Blue Devils Friday evening at Steele Hall.
On the men’s side, individuals saw victories in multiple events. The freshmen continued their strong start to the 2011-12 campaign as newcomer Corban Bothell earned top honors in the 1000-yard freestyle, clocking in at 10:15.52 as well as the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.00). Fellow freshmen Shane Baxter broke the 100-yard backstroke record he notched last weekend as well as earned a Fredonia pool record, when he clocked in at 52.05 for first place as sophomore Alex Siuda finished second (2:07.08). Baxter also won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:01.66. Bothell and Baxter, along with teammates Nate Resila and Brian Sawma, earned a win in the 200 medley with a combined time of 1:39.33.
Senior Ian O'Rourke took the 3-meter diving event with a final score of 272.05.
On the women's side, Lindsey Jackson led the charge for the Purple Eages. The junior finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle, clocking in at 11:04.35, with teammate Kaley Pfohl following close behind for a second place finish (11:14.87). Jackson also earned top honors in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.49).
The women were also represented well by junior Aubrey Kettrick, who finished in first place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.79) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.80). Sophomore Ashley Harrington won the 200-yard IM (2:16.87) while fellow sophomore Erica Crane finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The women's swimming and diving team return to the pool at Oxy Center when they host Youngstown State on Friday, Oct. 28 at 5 p.m.
