GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Niagara women's soccer team (2-1-1) dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the host East Carolina Pirates (3-2-0) on Monday afternoon.
Niagara played in it's second consecutive overtime game due to a late goal by sophomore Jamie Raepple. In the 77th minute, Raepple found the upper corner of the net, beating Pirate goalkeeper Christiane Cordero to tie the game.
The Pirates would earn the victory just three minutes into overtime, when Amanda Windsor converted on a cross, beating senior goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers.
"We played some very good soccer today," head coach Peter Veltri said. "We made a few mistakes and they capitalized on them."
The Purple Eagles played from behind for most of the game, as Jessica Woodward gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game. Behind by one, Niagara outshot East Carolina by a 10-5 margin in the first half, but couldn't convert.
Bowers made six saves in the loss.
"Even though we lost the game, we can still take a lot of positives from it," Veltri said. "We had different players step up and produce for us today."
Niagara is back in action on Friday, Sept. 10, when they host the Niagara University Fall Classic. The four-game event will begin on Friday, with Buffalo taking on Duquesne at 5 pm, with the Purple Eagles hosting Robert Morris at 7 p.m.
