NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara women's soccer team (2-0-1) controlled play against the Bowling Green Falcons (0-3-1) on Friday night at Niagara Field, but neither team could find the back of the net, resulting in a scoreless tie.
Senior goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers earned her second consecutive shutout in Niagara's first scoreless game since they hosted Syracuse on Sept. 13, 2009. Bowers now has a shutout streak of 266:55, only allowing one goal in three games this season for a miniscule 0.31 goals-against average.
Niagara had numerous opportunities to take home the win, outshooting the Falcons 19-5. Sophomore Julianne Viviano took a strong shot in the waning moments of the game, only for it to be stopped by Falcon netminder Alexa Arsenault.
"It's a shame we couldn't get the victory, but we played our best game of the year tonight," head coach Peter Veltri said. "We created a ton of opportunities, but we just couldn't capitalize."
While Niagara outshot the Falcons 6-2 in the first half, the Purple Eagles turned it on in the second half, outshooting their foes by a 10-1 margin. Arsenault stood tall for the Falcons, stopping all six shots she faced after entering the game in the second half.
"On a positive note, we played really good soccer tonight," Veltri said.
Niagara is now 6-2-1 in home opening games, dating back to the 2002 season. The Purple Eagles are back in action on Monday, Sept. 6, when they travel to take on East Carolina.
