Women's Soccer Blanks Colonials, 2-0

Jamie Raepple

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Niagara women's soccer (3-1-1) continued its recent success against visiting Robert Morris (2-3-1), downing the Colonials 2-0 in front of 375 fans at Niagara Field on Friday night. The Purple Eagles are now 11-2-1 all-time against Robert Morris.

"I thought we played a smart game tonight," head coach Peter Veltri said. "In the first half we did what we needed to do by scoring two goals."

Niagara controlled the pace in the nightcap of day one of the 2010 Niagara Fall Classic, outshooting the Colonials 11-1 in the opening 45 minutes. The Purple Eagles made it 1-0 when sophomore Jamie Raepple added her team-leading second goal in as many games, when she cashed in on a loose ball after a Chelsea Spencer indirect kick. Approximately eight minutes later, sophomore Michaela DiFazio scored from just outside the box, beating Colonials goalkeeper Jessica Olin high.

Robert Morris nearly came within one goal early in the second half, when a long shot was snared by a leaping Ashleigh Bowers. The senior goalkeeper only needed to make four saves in the victory.

With the shutout victory, Bowers now has three shutouts in her last four games, good for a 0.57 goals-against average. The Liverpool, N.Y. native and the rest of the Purple Eagles have yet to give up a goal at Niagara Field this season.

"Hopefully we can continue to improve and be ready for the MAAC schedule," Veltri said.

Niagara wraps up the invitational on Sunday, taking on Duquesne in the championship game at 1:30 pm. The Dukes defeated Buffalo 2-0 on Friday afternoon.
