RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Niagara baseball team suffered its first conference sweep of the season at the hands of Manhattan on Sunday, dropping a 4-2 game at Van Cortland Park.
The loss drops Niagara to a 9-9 MAAC record and pushes the Jaspers ahead of the Purple Eagles in the standings in the win column at 10-5
Manahttan's Mike McCann collected all four RBIs against Purple Eagle starter Bill Rafferty, including a first inning three-run home run.
The NU offense quickly put the team back in it with a two-run second inning, but McCan singled in a run with two outs in the fifth to push the game to a 4-2 lead.
Senior Jason Cramer belted a leadoff solo home run in the second for his fourth homer of the season. Junior Brian Deering singled to follow and came around to score on sophomore outfielder Adam Wagner's fourth RBI of the season, a sinlge up the middle.
After a Matt Wietlispach single, the Purple Eagles had runners at second and third in the inning, threatening to take the lead, but a groundout ended the threat. NU also left Cramer stranded at third base with two outs in the sixth.
Rafferty fell to 5-5 overall, while Eric Luksis picked up his third win of the season. Rookie Wes Walker collected a pinch-hit single with one out in the final frame, but Manhattan's John Soldinger shut the door for his seventh save of the year.
Cramer and Wagner both finished the game with two hits. Niagara travels to Kent State for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.
