LONGWOOD, Va. - The Niagara baseball team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, topping Longwood 8-7 in the second game of the doubleheader. Daniel Morari picked up the win after receiving a balanced offensive attack. The Purple Eagles were held to six hits in the game one loss, 10-3.
Niagara 8, Longwood 7
Eight of nine Purple Eagles starters collected a hit and scored a run. The one who did not, freshman catcher Evan Wexler, recorded his first career RBI with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Third baseman Trevor Rutkowski went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the win. The Purple Eagles broke a 2-1 game open in the fifth inning with six runs. The big blow was a 3-run double by Rutkowski.
Morari seemd to be cruising through the contest, but ran into trouble in the seventh and final inning. Geoff Strong came in relief and recorded the final two outs of the team's first win of the season.
Longwood 10, Niagara 3
Matt Wietlispach collected two of Niagara six hits in the opening loss. He scored on Ryan McCauley's groundout in the eighth-inning of the nine-inning affair. Marcus Spaulding took the loss, falling to 0-3 on the year.
The same two teams are back at it for a Sunday doubleheader at Longwood.
