Baseball Drops Pair at West Virginia

Adam Wagner

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Niagara baseball team (2-13) dropped both games of a doubleheader at Big East's West Virginia on Tuesday. The Purple Eagles dropped the first contest 6-0 before falling 8-2 in the night cap.

Niagara was held to five hits in both contests, but managed to collect a total of five doubles on the afternoon. In game one, sophomore Stephen Smith tallied two of NU's four doubles, but the offense wasn't able to push a run across. In game two, sophomore Adam Wagner tallied his first career extra base hit with a double in the sixth inning.

An early error cost the Purple Eagles four unearned runs, as WVU batted around in the first inning, jumping out to a five-run lead.

Senior Dennis Chachko went the distance in his third career start, and first since his freshman season, but took the tough-luck loss. He allowed just one run after the opening frame, but received no run support from the offense. The 6-foot-6 righthander scattered seven hits in the final five innings of work, allowing two total earned runs while striking out three batters and walking one.

Smith and Trevor Rutkowski both went 2-for-3 in the opening game, but the rest of the Purple Eagles went 1-for-20.

The Purple Eagles fell behind 7-0, including allowing the Mountaineers to post another crooked number in the first inning in dropping the second game of the double-dip.

Senior Geoff Strong took the loss, allowing seven earned runs in four-plus innings of work. Brian Deering pitched the game's final four innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out two.

The Purple Eagles cracked the scoreboard in the sixth inning when freshman Ryan McCauley, who was hit by a pitch, came around on a bases-loaded walk. NU would leave the bases loaded, though, on a groundout to third base.

Deering knocked in Cam Stykemain in the ninth inning on a single to left field.

The Purple Eagles return to the diamond with a doubleheader at Little 3 rival St. Bonaventure on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
