NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - A late goal by senior Michelle Emery (Colorado Springs, Colo.) propelled the Niagara women's soccer team (4-4-1) to a 2-1 triumph over the Temple Owls (4-3-1) in front of 174 fans at Niagara Field on Sunday afternoon.
Niagara was leading 1-0 in the 74th minute, when a loose ball in the box bounced off of a few players before landing in front of Emery, for her first game-winning goal of the season. Temple would come within one when Allicia Yurkovic scored nearly four minutes later, but it wasn't enough as the Owls couldn't string together another quality scoring chance after.
"It wasn't pretty, but we played well enough to win," head coach Peter Veltri said. "This wasn't our best effort. We now need to regroup and get ready for MAAC play that starts next weekend."
The Purple Eagles dented the scoreboard 14 minutes into the game, when freshman Jamie Raepple (Grand Island, N.Y.) finished off a nice run by sending a pass into the box, where senior Chiara Greco (Hamilton, Ont.) settled it down and ripped a shot that beat Owls goalkeeper Kara Williams to the far post. Raepple nearly missed making it 2-0 with 10 minutes left in the half, when an innocent chip shot just barely missed the far post.
The Purple Eagles are back in action on Friday, Sept. 25, when they begin MAAC play at home against Loyola. Niagara's game against Temple will be broadcast via tape delay on Lockport Community Television on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
