Baseball Takes Series With 10-2 Road Win

Michael Kellar

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Niagara baseball team improved to 3-3 in MAAC play after a series victory at Saint Peter's. The Purple Eagles won the rubber match with a 10-2 victory on Sunday, which was moved to Cochrane Stadium due to poor weather and field conditions.

Sunday's victory had quality pitching and timely hitting, helping NU earn its first MAAC series win of the season.

"We played well (Sunday) despite less than ideal conditions," Niagara head coach Rob McCoy said. "I thought we were better today mentally than we have been all year. I feel that will be the key to our sucess, and I am excited to see it continue to improve."

Senior Michael Kellar (Colifax, Ill.) tossed seven innings, allowing two runs on just three hits to earn his second win of the season. Classmate Mark Sikorski (Toronto, Ont.) pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Offensively, five Purple Eagles collected multiple hits, led by a four-hit effort from junior Matt Wietlispach (Chicago, Ill.). Freshman Keith Picconi (Merrick, N.Y.) knocked in five runs in just three at bats.

Wietlispach started the game off with a triple, and he was quickly brought in on an RBI double from sophomore Cam Stykemain (Defiance, Ohio). Stykemain scored on an Alex Otto (Lockport, N.Y.) single, giving the Purple Eagles an early 2-0 lead. Niagara was up 5-0 in the fifth inning before allowing Saint Peter's to score.

Wietlispach finished the day 4-for-5 with three runs, while Brian Deering (Springfield, Va.) went 3-for-4 with three runs. Picconi filled in at second base in the fifth inning, and collected a pair of two-RBI doubles and a ninth inning RBI groundout for a career-high five RBIs. Stykemain and Otto each recorded two hits in the win.

The Purple Eagles travel to Olean, N.Y. on Tuesday for a doubleheader with Little 3 Rival St. Bonaventure.
