St. Joseph's Tops Baseball, 4-1

Matt Wietlispach

PHILADELPHIA - The Niagara baseball team (3-11) fell to 1-2 at the Villanova Baseball Bash after a 4-1 loss at St. Joseph's on Sunday.

Junior Matt Wietlispach (Chicago, Ill.) led off the game with a home run, but that's all the offense NU could muster in the loss. The Purple Eagle stranded five runners in scoring position, including two in the first inning.

Michael Kellar (Colifax, Ill.) fell to 0-3 on the season after allowing four earned on six hits in four innings. Bill Rafferty (Ogdensburg, N.J.) pitched three scoreless innings in relief. Overall, Niagara pitchers walked eight batters in eight innings.

"We are still looking forward to getting our starters enough innings to give us what we need from them," Niagara head coach Rob McCoy said. "Although I am not happy with our overall record, we have had a good opportunity to find a lot out about our team. We look forward to conference play, where we think we can make a run."

The Purple Eagles open the home portion of their schedule on March 21 with a three-game set against Rider.
