Villanova Defeats Baseball

Matt Wietlispach

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Despite a 4-for-4 effort from junior Matt Wietlispach (Chicago, Ill.), the Niagara baseball team (2-10) dropped an 18-7 decision to host Villanova (7-6) as part of the Villanova Baseball Classic on Friday afternoon.

The Illinois native also added a run, an RBI and two stolen bases, but the host team proved too much for the Purple Eagles.

The Wildcats plated the first 11 runs, while outscoring Niagara 13-2 through four innings. The Purple Eagles would add three runs between the fifth and sixth inning to come within eight at 13-5, but a five-run sixth inning by the Wildcats cemented the victory.

Freshman Adam Wagner (Defiance, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while junior Trevor Rutkowski (Crystal Lake, Ill.) went 3-for-5, with two RBIs and a run.

Niagara continues in the Villanova Baseball Classic tomorrow, taking on Temple.
