Andrew Macdonald

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The Niagara baseball team (22-28, 10-14 MAAC) fell in its final game of the season to Canisius (40-11, 19-5 MAAC) on Friday, 7-4. Nine Purple Eagle seniors were active on Senior Day at Sal Maglie Stadium.

All nine hits came off the bats of eight seniors in the batting order, and the lone senior pitcher tossed 2.1 innings of one-hit baseball despite the loss. Mark Wilson (Peterborough, Ont.) struck out a batter and allowed just an eighth inning single as he closed out his career with the final seven outs of the game.

Senior Frank Kurnik (Reno, Nev.) went 3-for-4 and classmates Clint Elkins (Kansas City, Mo.) and Chris Leendertse (Ancaster, Ont.) collected a pair of hits in their final games. Leendertse knocked in a team-high two runs with singles in the second and sixth innings.

The nine members of the senior class were part of 90 victories, two MAAC Tournaments and the winningest season in school history. All nine players will walk at graduation this weekend.

"I couldn't be prouder of our senior class and the accomplishments that they have made both on and off the field in their wonderful careers," Niagara head coach Chris Chernisky said. "Some of them have been here just as long as I have, and together we have done some pretty remarkable things."

Senior Tim Alberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) finished his Purple Eagle career with the highest batting average in school history. His .360 averaged is tied with Josh McCurdy ('03) on the all-time list. Andrew Macdonald (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) finsihed his stellar career with 142 career singles, a mark that ranks second on the all-time chart. Wilson's 42 career starts is also tops in the school's records.
