OLEAN, N.Y. - The Niagara baseball team (21-26) lost its final non-conference tilt 10-2 at St. Bonaventure (27-21) on Tuesday afternoon. The Purple Eagles were held to a pair of base hits after the first inning in the loss.
Freshman Jonny Smith (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) collected two of Niagara's five hits while manning third base for the fourth-straight game. He led off the contest with a single to center field and eventually scored the game's first run on Harrison Harber's (Kanata, Ont.) RBI single through the right side.
Smith was moved into scoring position by Andrew Macdonald's (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) sixth consecutive hit, a bunt down the third baseline. The senior shortstop went 5-for-5 in his last contest, and finished Tuesday's game with a single and an eighth-inning sacrifice fly.
The Bonnies scored four runs in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. They added runs in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings for the final 10-2 margin.
Brad Lueck (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) pitched 2.2 innings, falling to 2-1 on the season. He allowed four runs on six hits in the loss.
Niagara closes out the 2008 campaign with a three-game series against rival Canisius College (38-10, 17-4 MAAC) on Thursday and Friday. Thursday's doubleheader begins at noon and senior day ceremonies begin at 1 p.m. on Friday.
