Clutch Hitting Eludes Baseball in 10-6 Loss to UB

Tim Alberts

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Niagara baseball team (12-14) dropped a 10-6 non-conference contest at Buffalo (8-20) on Wednesday. The Purple Eagles went 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base.

While Niagara struggled to knock in the clutch run with two outs throughout the day, the Bulls final three runs, which put the game out of reach, all came with two outs.

Senior Tim Alberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had three RBIs in the loss. The right fielder had two RBI groundouts and a sixth-inning double. The Purple Eagles led 3-1 in the second and fought back to tie the score at 5 in the sixth inning, but could not piece together multiple clutch hits in the loss.

Freshman Cam Stykemain (Defiance, Ohio) and senior Andrew Macdonald (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) both scored two runs for the second time in three games.

Sophomore Bill Rafferty (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) allowed seven runs on 10 hits in five innings of work. Dennis Chachko (Oceanport, N.J.) and Mark Sikorski (Toronto, Ont.) pitched in relief for Niagara.

Besides Alberts, catcher Matt Lucchesi (San Francisco, Calif.) was the only other Purple Eagle to record a hit with a runner in scoring position. Macdonald and Jason Cramer (Jackson, N.J.) each had two hits.

The Purple Eagles resume MAAC play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Manhattan.
