Baseball Splits Double Dip With Le Moyne

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The Niagara baseball team (11-11) won a nail biter in game two to earn a doubleheader split with Le Moyne (11-15) on Saturday in the home opener at Sal Maglie Stadium. After dropping game one 5-0, the Purple Eagles scratched out a 3-2 victory in seven innings.

"In game one, we ran into a quality pitcher and only managed three hits," Niagara head coach Chris Chernisky said. "I'm extremely proud of our team's ability to bounce back yet again and take the second game of the day. Daniel Morari was outstanding on the mound, and we were fundamentally sound in all aspects of the second game, which enabled us to pick up the win."

The Purple Eagles played small ball and escaped a dramatic final inning to earn the one-run victory. Closer Mark Sikorski (Toronto, Ont.) walked the bases loaded twice and allowed a run to score on a wild pitch, but struck out the Dolphins' clean-up hitter to earn his third save of the season.

After a one-out triple in the fourth inning, Harrison Harber (Kanata, Ont.) stole home to give Niagara a 2-0 lead. The second baseman went 2-for-2 in game two, including his second triple of the year. Le Moyne inched closer at 2-1 with three two-out hits, including an RBI single by the No. 9 hitter, Chris Murphy.

The Purple Eagles extended the lead back to two runs with their own two-out RBI. Freshman Cam Stykemain (Defiance, Ohio) continued his hot hand with a single through the right side. That base-knock, the rookie's second of the day, plated Chris Leendertse (Ancaster, Ont.) who started the inning with a double in the right-center gap. Stykemain is 7-for-8 in his last four games with three runs and three RBIs.

Junior hurler Daniel Morari (Saskatoon, Sask.) picked up his second-straight win. The left-hander lasted five innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three. After a leadoff single and walk, Morari retired 14 of the next 15 batters.

Le Moyne 5, Niagara 0
Le Moyne senior Eric Beaulac allowed one hit over seven innings while striking out eight to earn his third win of the year in game one. Senior Tim Alberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) collected the only hit of the Dolphin ace, a fourth inning single through the left side.

Senior Mark Wilson (Peterborough, Ont.) had one of his best outings of the season, pitching seven solid innings. The right-hander allowed three runs on nine hits, lowering his season earned-run average over one run in the loss. The Dolphins scored on a second-inning sacrifice fly, three-straight sinlges in the fifth and a solo home run in the seventh. Le Moyne added two more unearned insurance runs in the ninth inning.
