NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The Purple Eagle pitching staff continued its stellar play early against Buffalo, and the bats gave the bullpen plenty of support in a 10-6 win on Wednesday. Junior Brad Lueck (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) earned his first career victory, tossing six scoreless innings, to give the Purple Eagles a three-game win streak.
Lueck scattered four hits while walking one batter in six innings. The right-hander struck out two Bulls, lowering his earned-run average over 2.5 runs, from 8.79 to 6.20.
"It wasn't the prettiest one, but a win is a win," head coach Chris Chernisky said. "Brad Lueck did a solid job on the hill for us tonight."
Niagara scored four runs on passed balls or wild pitches, and got three knocked in by first baseman Timothy Cozier (Ajax, Ont.). The sophomore came up twice with the bases loaded, and picked up his first two hits of the season, brining home two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth.
Freshman Jonny Smith (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) batted leadoff for the first time this season, and collected two hits, stole a base and scored a run. Eight of the nine Purple Eagle starters collected at least one hit.
Niagara travels to Rider for a three-game MAAC series this weekend. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is at noon.
