Morari's Game Two Shutout Earns Baseball Split

Daniel Morari

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - Junior left-hander Daniel Morari (Saskatoon, Sask.) hurled a complete game shutout in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, helping the baseball team to a split with Saint Peter's. Morari struck out seven, including the game's final batter, to improve to 5-2 with the 3-0 win. The game marked the first shutout for Niagara since May 13, 2007.

"Saint Peter's pitching staff was great, and we dealt with it all day long, but we scratched and clawed to a game two victory," Niagara head coach Chris Chernisky said. "Dan gave us a shot in the arm today with a great pitching performance."

Niagara (15-18, 5-6 MAAC) dropped the first game to the Peacocks (15-18, 5-6 MAAC), 10-3. The Purple Eagles allowed four unearned runs on four errors in the first two innings in the defeat. The Peacocks staff allowed just seven hits in the win.

Morari scattered five hits in seven innings for his second-straight complete game in the game two victory. The left-hander recorded his first career shutout in his fourth victory in a row, striking out seven. In his last four starts, Morari has allowed three total earned runs, dropping his earned-run average to a team-high 3.18.

After a pair of first-inning Peacock singles, with runners on the corners, Morari tried to pick off SPC's Kevin Kallert at first. Chris Leendertse (Ancaster, Ont.) caught the pick-off attempt and, as Brandon Edwards raced toward home, the first baseman fired the ball home and Clint Elkins (Kansas City, K.C.) tagged out Edwards after blocking the plate. That was as close as the Peacocks would get to scoring on Morari on Saturday.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, with the game still scoreless, Frank Kurnik (Reno, Nev.) came up with the first of two Purple Eagle two-out RBIs, when he connected on a bloop single to right field, plating Harrison Harber (Kanata, Ont.). It was Niagara's first hit of the game.

Three-straight two-out singles in the fifth inning gave Morari extra run support. Andrew Macdonald (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) lined a single to right field before Tim Alberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) connected on a single to right center. Harber brought home Macdonald in the next at bat, advancing Alberts to third. In what looked to be a good play by Peacock catcher John Lynch turned into a costly error in the next at bat. Lynch bluffed Alberts down the line and seemed to have the senior picked off third, but his throw sailed into left field and Alberts made the score 3-0.

The Peacocks capitalized on four Niagara errors in the first two innings and jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back.

Mark Wilson (Peterborough, Ont.) committed two of the errors and allowed nine hits and seven runs, three earned, in five innings. He walked three and struck out four in the loss.

Macdonald went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Harber scored once and brought home another in the loss.

The rubber match of the three-game set is at noon on Sunday.
