YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Niagara baseball team (13-17) dropped its seventh-straight non-conference game on Tuesday, a 13-3 decision at Youngstown State. The Purple Eagles managed just five hits in the loss.
Freshman Brian Deering (Springfield, Va.) continued his recent hitting success, seeing playing time in the No. 2 hole on Tuesday. The third baseman was the only Niagara player to record two hits on the afternoon, with a pair of singles.
Senior Tim Alberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) recorded a sixth-inning double and scored on Steve Baldinelli's (Niagara Falls, Ont.) sacrifice fly. Catcher Matt Lucchesi (San Francisco, Calif.) knocked in Baldinelli in the sixth with a single before Andrew Macdonald (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) brought in Frank Kurnik (Reno, Nev.) with a groundout.
Youngstown's Alex Kalafos went seven innings, striking out nine batters while walking two. The Penguins scored four runs in the third and seven in the fourth inning to take a demanding lead. Bill Rafferty (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) fell to 1-3 on the year. The right-hander went three innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out three.
The Purple Eagles are back in action on Wednesday at Sal Maglie Stadium with an afternoon contest with Cleveland State. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
