WATERLOO, ONT. - The Niagara men's swimming and diving team trailed heading into the last relay of the day, needing a first and third in the 400-yard freestyle for the victory. The Purple Eagle swimmers touched the wall in first and third and swam away with a 120-118 victory at Waterloo on Saturday.
The relay squad of Jon Matchette (Kenmore, N.Y.), Tyler Ferguson (Fredonia, N.Y.), Kevin Jennings (Gasport, N.Y.) and Ian McCoy (Redlands, Calif.) took first place with a time of 3:19.82. Mike Smiechowski (Apex, N.C.), Nick Squire (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), Justin Delecki (West Seneca, N.Y.) and Dane Deehr (Woodinville, Wash.) touched the pad third, giving the Purple Eagles the win.
"A meet that close comes down to second, third, fourth and fifth place finishes, not just the winners," Niagara head coach Ben Nigro said. "It was a total team effort."
Smiechowski broke the 1,000 free record with a 9:56.61 as NU went 1-2-3 in the event. Smiechowski also took medalist honors in the 500 free (4:54.47).
Lucas Shumway (Sanborn, N.Y.) was a double winner in the 100 breast (1:03.04) and 200 breast (2:17.16). Jennings earned his first career individual title with a 50.86 in the 100 free, which Niagara also swept.
