Women’s Soccer Heads to Michigan for Two Matches

Erin Baker

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women’s soccer team looks to continue its winning ways as it travels to Michigan for a pair of games this weekend. The Purple Eagles will take on Detroit on Friday at 3 p.m., before heading to Mount Pleasant for Sunday’s 1 p.m. matchup with Central Michigan.

The Purple Eagles earned runner-up honors at the Niagara Classic last weekend after falling to Buffalo on Friday and defeating Binghamton, 2-1, on Sunday. Although Niagara and Buffalo each finished with 1-1 records, the Purple Eagles won the tie-breaker based on goal differential. In all, three Purple Eagles were named to the all-tournament team, including freshman defender Erin Baker (Oswego, N.Y.). Baker has started every game at the center back position and has been a steadying influence in the defense. NU’s freshmen have continued to make their mark on the program, while Caitlin Long has also made a mark on the scoresheet. Long, a midfielder from Tonawanda, N.Y., scored her first career goal in NU’s win over Binghamton and also notched her first assist against Buffalo.

Detroit (0-3-0) has struggled offensively this season and has been outscored, 10-1, by its three opponents. Before facing Niagara on Friday, the Titans meet Michigan State on Wednesday in East Lansing. Sophomore Trina Kochanski has Detroit’s lone goal on the season, while junior Katie Fortenberry has been busy in goal facing 41 shots.

Central Michigan (2-2-0) on the other hand, seems to have found the key to scoring goals. Following a 4-0 season-opening win over Elon, the Chippawas were held scoreless in their next two games before erupting for a school-record eight goals against IPFW. In the 8-1 win, seven different players found the back of the net, including sophomore Molly Gerst with a pair of tallies, giving her a team-leading four goals on the season.
