JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The baseball team (12-23, 2-13 MAAC) was swept in a twinbill at Saint Peter’s (20-21, 10-7 MAAC), Sunday, 5-1 and 11-10. For the second consecutive day the Purple Eagles lost a considerable lead late in the game, blowing a 9-2 advantage in the sixth inning of the final game.
Junior Mark Wilson (Peterborough, Ont.) took the loss in the middle game of the series, allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings. Sophomore Dennis Chachko (Oceanport, N.J.) earned the loss without recording an out in game three of the series. He allowed a hit to both batters that he faced, and the lone run he allowed was the go-ahead score.
Saint Peter’s 5, Niagara 1
The Purple Eagles were held to four hits and one run in the seven-inning loss. Trailing 2-0 in the third inning, junior Andrew Macdonald (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) drew a two-out walk and came around to score Niagara’s lone run on a double by classmate Tim Alberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y.).
The Peacocks scored a run in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings in the win. Junior Santo Maertz earned the win to improve to 2-2, scattering four hits and one run in six innings.
Saint Peter’s 11, Niagara 10
Niagara took a 9-2 lead into the sixth inning, but allowed nine runs in the sixth and seventh innings in the 11-10 loss. Every Purple Eagle recorded a hit as Niagara outhit the Peacocks 15-13, but they went cold in the last three innings, scoring one run and collecting four hits.
Senior Brian Clifford (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon), Alberts, junior Harrison Harber (Kanata, Ont.) and freshman Jason Cramer (Jackson, N.J.) each knocked in two runs in the loss, while senior James Nikolaides (Dedham, Mass.) was the lone starter not to score a run for the Purple Eagles.
The Purple Eagles look top snap their season-long losing streak at home against Big Four rival Buffalo, Tuesday at 4 p.m.
