Baseball Loses Game One at Saint Peter’s

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The baseball team (12-21, 2-11 MAAC) fell in the opening game of a three-game series at Saint Peter’s (18-21, 8-7 MAAC), Saturday, 11-10. Niagara scored 10 runs on six hits with six Saint Peter’s errors.

The Purple Eagles took a 10-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning before the first six Peacocks reached base and eventually scored in the victory.

With the score tied 5-5 with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Niagara’s Alex Otto (Lockport, N.Y.) reached on an error by the third baseman. Four singles, two errors and a base-on-balls later, the Purple Eagles were ahead 10-5.

Senior James Boyack (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) and freshman Geoff Strong (Welland, Ont.) pitched the ninth inning, allowing six earned runs in the loss, with Strong receiving his first loss of the season.

Sophomore Bobby Lenhard (Rochester, N.Y.) and junior Andrew Macdonald (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) each drove in three runs. Lenhard was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Junior Chris Leendertse (Ancaster, Ont) collected two RBIs in the loss.

The Purple Eagles and Peacocks finish the three-game series Sunday at Jaroschak Field, with a doubleheader starting at noon.
