Baseball Falls in Big Four Classic to Buffalo, 8-4

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The baseball team (12-20) lost in the Big Four consolation game to Buffalo (8-26) Wednesday, 8-4, at Sal Maglie Stadium. Junior outfielder Tim Alberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) was named to the All-Classic Team.

Despite getting three unearned runs in the first inning, the Purple Eagles were held to four hits in the remaining innings in the loss.

Sophomore Chris Coleman (Pittsford, N.Y.) allowed two runs in the sixth inning to earn the loss. The left-hander entered the game with the scored tied at 3-3 and walked two of the first three batters he faced. Both runs came around to score two batters later on a Rick Oliveri single to right field.

Niagara added a run in the eighth to cut the deficit to 5-4, but the Bulls added three insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning for the 8-4 final score.

The Purple Eagles got on the board in the first when Buffalo's center fielder Bobby Pizzuto dropped a bases-loaded fly ball with two outs, allowing three runners to score.

Pizzuto joined Alberts as the lone members of the All-Classic Team from the consolation game. Pizzuto went 6-for-10 with three runs and four RBIs in the Classic, while Alberts collected five hits, scored twice and knocked in two more.

Canisius claimed its second consecutive Big Four Classic in the night cap with a 7-0 victory over St. Bonaventure. Pitcher Ryan McGorman improved to 2-3 scattering two hits over six innings while striking out three.
