Frank Kurnik

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The baseball team (12-18, 2-10 MAAC) lost its seventh-straight conference game with a 4-1 loss to Manhattan (23-11, 14-0 MAAC) Sunday at Sal Maglie Stadium. The Jaspers retired the last 13 Purple Eagles in the victory.

Freshman right-hander Tom Costigan improved to 5-1, going eight innings allowing one run on four hits. Classmate Tom Moran picked up his third save with a perfect ninth inning.

Sophomore Mark Sikorski (Toronto, Ont.) fell to 1-1 with the second consecutive tough-luck loss for Niagara. The right-hander went 6 1/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned on four hits.

Kevin Nieto scored on a third-inning bases-loaded groundout by catcher Nick Derba. Nieto lined a one-out base hit through the right-side for the lone hit of the inning.

The Purple Eagles tied the score in the fifth inning after junior Frank Kurnik (Reno, Nev.) hit a single through the right-side. After the junior swiped his sixth stolen base of the year to move into scoring position, Tim Alberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) picked up his team-high 27th RBI of the year with a single to right field.

The Japsers next two runs came on sacrifice flies, including the unearned game-winning run in the fifth. First baseman Matt Rizzotti knocked in two runs in the win.

The Purple Eagles are back in action April 24-25 at the Big Four Classic. Niagara faces Canisius, Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Sal Maglie Stadium.
