BRONX, N.Y. – The baseball team (6-10, 0-3 MAAC) dropped two games against conference foe Fairfield (4-8, 3-0 MAAC), Monday, at Houlihan Park in the Bronx, N.Y. The Purple Eagles lost the first game 8-7 and dropped game two by a score of 7-2.
A majority of the Niagara’s production came from its middle infield positions, as juniors Andrew Macdonald (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) and Harrison Harber (Kanata, Ont.) combined for seven hits, six runs and four RBIs.
Sophomore Mark Sikorski (Toronto, Ont.) made two relief appearances for his first action after suffering an injury in the team’s first week.
Fairfield 8, Niagara 7
The Stags score eight runs in the middle innings and held off a late rally by Niagara for the 8-7 win.
The Purple Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the third on one hit, two walks and three stolen bases, but senior Matt Ircandia (Calgary, Alb.) gave up three runs on six hits in the bottom of the inning. The left-hander (2-3) was chased in the fourth inning, after giving up three more runs, two of them earned.
Macdonald went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the loss. The shortstop connected on a three-run home run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-5. Harber knocked in Macdonald in the seventh and scored on junior Tim Alberts’ (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) stolen base to inch closer at 8-7, but the Purple Eagles could not get any closer.
Fairfield 7, Niagara 2
Sophomore Dennis Chachko (Oceanport, N.J.) took the loss, giving up three runs in 2.2 innings. The Niagara offense was held in check, picking up eight hits while scoring only two runs.
Harber tripled down the left field line in the fifth and scored on a ground out, but Niagara fell behind early and could not recover.
The Purple Eagles look to snap their three-game losing streak, Tuesday, at Duquesne, at 3 p.m.
