Baseball Drops MAAC Opener to Fairfield, 1-0

BRONX, N.Y. – The baseball team (6-8, 0-1 MAAC) lost a tight contest with Fairfield (2-8, 1-0 MAAC), Sunday, 1-0 at Houlihan Park in the Bronx, N.Y. The Purple Eagles outhit the Stags five to four, but could not produce a run for the first time this season.

Junior Mark Wilson (Peterborough, Ont.) scattered three hits in seven innings of work while striking out 11. The right-hander (3-3) walked a season-high five batters in the loss, as the lone run of the game came from a Stag who was awarded a free pass.

Junior Tim Alberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) finished the game 0-for-4, ending the nation’s longest hitting streak at 35 games. The left fielder flew out to left field once and center field twice before committing the final out of the game, popping out to second.

Niagara did not have a multiple-hit inning or have a baserunner advance past second base in the loss.

With two outs and two runners aboard by walks in the bottom of the second inning, Wilson allowed a single through the right side to third baseman David Dudish. Brian Rudolph scored the game’s only run, but that is all Ryan Carabrese would need. The junior righty (2-2) got 17 fly outs in the complete game win.

The two teams face off in a doubleheader, Monday at noon. Niagara’s probale starters are senior Matt Ircandia (Calgary, Alb.) and sophomore Dennis Chachko (Oceanport, N.J.).
