Tennis Teams Open Spring Season This Weekend

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s tennis teams open their spring schedules this weekend when they to take on Robert Morris Saturday at 3 p.m. at the New Life Tennis and Fitness Center in Wexford, Pa. The men’s team then plays Duquesne Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Purple Eagle women’s squad finished the fall season 2-0 after shutting out Oakland University, 7-0, and St. Francis (Pa.), 7-0.

Senior Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) leads the team with a 4-3 overall records and marks of 1-0 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Niagara’s top three singles players, sophomore Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.), senior Jennifer Cremieux (Ajax, Ont.) and freshman Molly Mathews (Pittsburgh, Pa.) all sport 2-0 dual records.

In doubles, Cary and junior Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y./East) are 2-0 at No. 1 singles.

Robert Morris enters the spring season with a 1-2 record after losing to Duquesne, 5-2, in its last outing Sept. 23.

Katie Kravits is 0-3 at No. 1 singles, but Kathryn Skopinski is 2-1 at No. 4, and teams with Sarah Hancock at No. 3 doubles for the 2-1 mark.

The Purple Eagle men’s squad finished their fall season with a 1-0 dual record after beating St. Francis (Pa.), 7-0, and playing in four tournaments.

Last year, Niagara defeated the Colonels, 5-2, on Monteagle Ridge. The Purple Eagles swept the doubles point and the top four singles matches.

Senior Erick Garcia (Oaxaca, Mexico) and junior Walter Garcia (Oaxaca, Mexico) are 8-4 and 7-4, respectively at No. 2 and No. 1 singles.

In doubles, Erick Garcia and sophomore Marc Dickinson (Saskatoon, Sask.) are 6-2 overall while Walter Garcia and junior Alex Abji (Vancouver, B.C.) are sporting a 5-3 mark.

Robert Morris is 1-2 on the season and enters the match on a two-match losing streak after losing to Duquesne, 5-2, on Sept. 17. Sean Curley is 2-1 at No. 1 singles while Nick Paganetti and Cyrus Manouchehrian are 0-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Duquesne remains undefeated at 4-0 enter the spring season. It beat Mercyhurst, 6-1, on Oct. 14 in its last outing.

The Dukes are strong in the bottom half of the lineup as Mark Maciuch is 8-1 overall at No. 4, Gustavo Villares is 8-1 overall, including 5-0 at No. 5, while Adam Townsend is 6-0 at No. 6.

Last year, Niagara defeated Robert Morris, 6-1, on Monteagle Ridge. It swept the doubles point and won the top five singles matches.
