Colgate Dominates Second Half in 4-3 Win Over Niagara Women’s Soccer

Caitlin Long posted her first
goal of 2006 in Sunday's loss.

HAMILTON, N.Y. – On a gloomy, rainy day in Hamilton, N.Y., the Niagara women’s soccer team was outshot 17-1 in the second half en route to a 4-3 loss at Colgate Sunday afternoon. It was the Purple Eagles’ first road match of the year, as they fell to 1-1-0 on the season.

For the match, Colgate (1-0-0) posted 29 shots to Niagara’s 12. Freshman keeper Sarah Stephens (Toledo, Ohio) recorded 13 saves, while junior Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.) netted her third goal in two matches. For the second match in a row, sophomore Stephanie Gartley (Sarnia, Ont.) added two assists and senior Emily Montgomery (Oshawa, Ont.) picked up a goal.

Early on, it looked like Niagara would control the contest by earning a goal from Bisnott only 33 seconds in with Gartley earning her first assist. But just over two minutes later, Jackie Burch tied it for the Raiders and they took the lead in the 22nd minute thanks to a deflection off a Niagara player in front of the net. But just 1:31 before halftime, Montgomery evened it back up with her second goal of the year. Gartley got the assist, her fourth of the 2006 campaign.

As soon as the teams returned to the field, Colgate kept up the pressure and scored twice within the first nine minutes of the second stanza. Sophomore Caitlin Long (Fort Collins, Colo.) did notch her first goal of the season with help from sophomore Shaylyn Lawrence (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) in the 72nd minute. The shot from Long ended up being the only attempt the Purple Eagles would take in the half as the Raiders held on for the one-goal victory.

The Purple Eagles remain on the road when they visit Albany Wednesday at 3 p.m.
