NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Niagara University men’s and women’s tennis teams are taking a break from Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action when they host Robert Morris University at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Sportsplex in North Tonawanda.
The Purple Eagle women’s squad (6-9) enters the match on a two-match winning streak. They remained undefeated in league play with victories over Fairfield University and Manhattan College.
Four players are riding winning streaks coming into the match. Sophomore Kim Roberts (Victoria, B.C.) has won her last three matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles and is 7-7 in dual matches. Classmate and MAAC Player of the Week Shella Dargout (Rochester, N.Y.) and senior Danielle Grenier (Fort Erie, Ont.) have won their last two matches at No. 4 and No. 5, and No. 3 and No. 4. Dargout stands at 6-8 in dual matches and Grenier at 3-5.
In doubles Dargout and junior Jacquelyn Cary (Selkirk, N.Y.) are on a three-match winning streak and stand at 5-5 at No. 2 in dual matches. The freshman duo of Vanja Lakic (Waterloo, Ont.) and Victoria Tiso (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) sport a 4-2 dual record and have won their last two matches.
Robert Morris enters the match looking for an end to a seven-match losing streak. In the Colonials last match, they lost to California (Pa.), 9-0. Renee James is 0-10 at No. 1 singles, and is 0-2 at No. 1 doubles with partner Kali Delorie.
Last season, the Purple Eagles posted a 7-0 shut out of the Colonials.
The Niagara men’s tennis team looks to end a two-match skid after dropping matches to Fairfield and Manhattan last weekend.
Sophomore Walter Garcia (Oaxaca, Mexico) sports an 8-1 dual and a 15-6 overall record at No. 1 singles. He had an eight-match winning streak snapped last weekend.
Senior Dave Rueter (Langhorne, Pa.) has strung together a three-match winning streak. He stands at 8-4 overall and 7-3 in dual matches at No. 6 singles.
Garcia and classmate Alex Abji (Vancouver, B.C.) are 6-3 overall, and have won their last two at No. 2 doubles, making them 4-0 on the season.
Robert Morris has lost its last four matches and has been idle since March 19 when it lost to Youngstown State, 6-1.
At No. 1 singles, Nick Paganetti is 3-8 in dual matches and 3-10 overall. The Colonials No. 1 doubles team of Youssef Mekaoui is 1-7.
In their first meeting this season on March 18, Niagara beat Robert Morris, 6-1, on a neutral court in Indiana.
