BALTIMORE, Md. – The Niagara University women’s soccer team (7-4-0, 3-1-0) had its four-game winning streak snapped Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 loss at Loyola College (5-5-2, 3-0-0) at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.
The Purple Eagles struck first when junior Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.) scored in the game’s fourth minute when her shot from the top of the box eluded Loyola goalkeeper Brittany Henderson. The goal was her 12th of the season and fourth this week.
Niagara then took a 2-0 lead in the 16th minute when a shot by sophomore Stephanie Gartley (Sarnia, Ont.) deflected off a Loyola player and into the net.
"We made a few mental mistakes and they were able to capitalize on them," Niagara head coach Peter Veltri said. "When it was 2-1, they played smarter and we paid for it. We need to learn from our mistakes and move forward.
Loyola, which has now won 41 consecutive regular-season MAAC matches, responded with two goals by Christina Gomez. Gomez’s first goal, which came at 22:17, deflected off Niagara keeper Sara Stephens (Toledo, Ohio). Gomez’s second goal, which happened in the 34th minute, was a long shot that hit the left-hand corner of the net.
Loyola’s Courtney Arikian later added an unassisted goal in the 39th minute to give the Greyhounds the win. Loyola outshot Niagara, 23-8.
Stephens made nine saves in net and Henderson one.
The Purple Eagles face cross-town rival Canisius College Friday in a 3 p.m. match at Niagara Field.
