POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Scoring seven runs in the fourth inning, Marist College (24-17, 17-4) earned a decisive 16-2 victory over the Niagara University baseball team (18-24, 11-8) Sunday at McCann Field, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Suffering the second largest margin of loss of the season, the Purple Eagles surrendered 13 runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings in the loss.
In the seven-run fourth, Marist was led by a three-run double by junior Andy Kiriakedes and a two-run single by senior Kevin Buck. On the day, Kiriakedes led the Red Foxes with five RBI, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Buck had three hits in the win, contributing with two RBI and two runs scored.
Also registering multiple RBI in the win for Marist were sophomores Travis Musolf (2) and Pat Feeney (2), along with junior Kevin Grauer (2).
Niagara held a 1-0 lead through the first three innings after junior Dan Parsons (Liverpool, N.Y.) scored on an error by Marist junior pitcher Jonathan Smith, which allowed Purple Eagles junior Mike Medici (Latham, N.Y.) to reach first, extending the inning.
Leading the Purple Eagles in the loss from the plate was junior Andrew MacNevin (St. Catharines, P.E.I.), who went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Smith allowed seven hits in the win for the Red Foxes, pitching all nine innings and striking out four.
Purple Eagles starter Josh Sawatzky (Altona, Man.) went 3 2-3 innings, allowing six runs and striking out three.
Niagara returns to action May 15, hosting Rider University in a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series at Sal Maglie Stadium, in Niagara Falls, N.Y. In Sunday’s doubleheader against the Broncs, two Niagara seniors -- Reed Eastley (Brandon, Man.) and Chris Cerchie (Lasalle, Ont.) -- will be honored prior to Game 1, as they enter their final home games of their collegiate careers.
