SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Niagara University baseball team (3-17, 1-3) fell 4-2 Le Moyne College (8-8, 4-0) Sunday at Rockwell Field.
A three-run fifth inning led the Dolphins to their fifth consecutive win, remaining undefeated in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a 4-0 record.
Tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Le Moyne junior Mike Affronti hit an RBI-double to score senior Aaron Bulkley from first for the go-ahead run for the Dolphins. Affronti would later score in the inning on a single by junior Andre Enriquez.
The final Le Moyne run of the fifth came on a sacrifice fly by junior Brian Hansen, which scored junior Keith Connors.
Down three runs in the ninth innings, juniors Mike Alati (Woodbridge, Ont.) and Mike Medici (Latham, N.Y.) reached base on a double and single, respectively. With the game-tying run at the plate, Niagara junior Andrew MacNevin (St. Catharines, P.E.I.) hit a fly ball to left center to score Alati and cut the Le Moyne lead to two runs.
Dolphins sophomore Bobby Blevins, who picked up the complete-game win, induced a force out to end the Purple Eagle comeback and help Le Moyne to its 11th-straight MAAC win. Blevins gave up seven hits and struck out 11 in the win.
Niagara junior James Avery (Moose Jaw, Sask.) pitched three innings, striking out three, before being replaced by junior Kyle Nicoletta (Oakville, Ont.), who picked up the loss.
The two teams are scheduled for a doubleheader Monday at Rockwell Field, with Game 1 set for a 1 p.m. start.
