JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Three runs in the seventh inning led Saint Peter’s College (3-25, 2-9) to a 5-2 win over the Niagara University baseball team (10-18, 6-4) Sunday at Jaroschak Field. The loss ended a seven-game win streak for the Purple Eagles.
Ahead 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, sophomore outfielder Wayne Guarino hit a double to right field, scoring freshman Dennis Alexander and extending the Peacock lead to two runs. Guarino would later score on an RBI-single by junior Jared Fowler.
Junior Rob Scordato scored the final run of the three-run seventh inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly by freshman David Lewandoski.
Trailing by four runs, Niagara junior Mike Alati (Woodbridge, Ont.) led off the ninth inning with a triple to right, later scoring on freshman Andrew MacDonald’s (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) ground out. Peacock freshman reliever Chris Innis induced a fly out by Niagara junior Jeff Vincent (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and a ground out by sophomore James Nikolaides (Dedham, Mass.) to end the contest and seal the victory for Saint Peter’s.
Innis, along with freshman starting pitcher Santo Maertz combined to four-hit Niagara, leading the Peacocks to their first win in the last six games. Maertz (1-7) pitched 7 1-3 innings, allowing three hits and striking out five to earn his first career win.
Niagara junior pitcher James Avery (Moose Jaw, Sask.) pitched 6 1-3 innings, striking out eight and allowing six hits.
Alati led Niagara in the loss, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Lewandoski led the Peacocks with three RBI.
The Purple Eagles next travel to McGraw-Jennings Field for a non-conference game against St. Bonaventure Tuesday.
