Baseball Falls to Siena in Extra Innings

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Siena College (4-12, 2-1) scored two runs in the top of the 11th inning to defeat the Niagara University baseball team (3-15, 1-2), 7-5, Monday at Bobo Field.

Junior Gabe Perez and freshman Jacob Willis each hit solo home runs off of Niagara sophomore Dan Griffin (Schenectady, N.Y.) in the top of the 11th to lead the Saints to the two-run win.

Siena sophomore James Pacifico struck out two in the bottom half of the 11th to earn the save and secure the win for the Saints.

After Siena took a 6-5 lead in the top of the 10th inning, Niagara junior Mike Medici (Latham, N.Y.) hit a solo home run to right field, tying the game and sending it to the 11th. Medici led the Purple Eagles with three hits in the loss, extending his RBI streak to five games.

Niagara took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning after hits by sophomore Brian Clifford (Buffalo) and junior Mike Alati (Woodbridge, Ont.).

Down by a run, the Saints scored three runs in the fourth inning, taking a 4-2 lead on the Purple Eagles. Leading the Siena charge in the fourth was junior Matt Gidaly, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in the win. Gidaly hit a two-run home run in the fourth to help the Saints take the lead.

With Siena ahead, 5-4, the Purple Eagles tied the game in the seventh off a single by Clifford, scoring junior Matt Schaefer (Clifton Park, N.Y.) from third. The score would remain tied heading into extra innings.

Siena senior Josh Burnett pitched 10 innings to earn the win, striking out six and allowing 10 hits. Griffin struck out 10 in seven innings of work, allowing seven hits and walking two.

Niagara junior Kyle Nicoletta (Oakville, Ont.), who started the game, allowed eight hits and four runs in four innings.

The Purple Eagles travel to the University of Pittsburgh Tuesday for a non-conference game at Trees Field. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
